BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE RED HEADED AGAMA

Distribution: Africa
Size: 13" - 15"

NATURAL HABITAT:
Inhabits semi-desert and scrubland areas of Africa.
adults in captivity require a fairly large vivarium,
48" x 18" x 18" is recommended.

BEHAVIOR:
Most will become tame with regular handling.
Males can become territorial, Keep separate from other males.
These lizards are primarily active during the day.

CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT:
Use full spectrum 5% UVB lighting 12-14 hours per day.
Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
Supply lots of climbing areas.
Supply several basking areas of logs, rocks.
Supply hiding places cork bark or rocks for cover.
Substrate: Orchid bark sand and/or gravel would do fine.

TEMPERATURE:
Daytime temperature should be:
basking area 90 degrees F.
cool area 80 degrees F.
Night temperatures should range between 74-80 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour ground heat inside
the vivarium.

HUMIDITY:
This lizard requires only low levels of humidity.

WATER REQUIREMENTS:
Requires only a small water dish for drinking.
Change water regularly.

NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
These lizards are carnivores, who's main diet consists of
Insects: feed crickets, locusts, mealworm and waxworm.
Offer a variety for proper nutrition. Also use a good
vitamin supplement.
