Blood Python
Python Curtus
Origin
Blood Pythons are found in the marshes and swamp areas of the rain forests of the Southern Malay Peninsula.
Description
Colour ranges from a washed out to blood red over a tan body. The tan colour can also range from very light to dark tan. There is also a red stripe that runs from the eye along the side of the head.
Temperament
Blood Pythons can be unpredictable and sometimes aggressive so when buying choose carefully. If handled regularly and gently they tend to settle down.
Housing
The Blood Python is rather short Between 6 and 9feet, but still needs a large Vivarium at least 4ft x 2ft x 2ft bigger if possible. Use orchid bark chips as a substrate if possible this will help keep the humidity level's high, these snakes like a high humidity level. I find that these snakes like to hide a lot so supply plenty of cover for them. Also supply a large water dish.
Temperature
The temperature of your Vivarium should be kept at about 80 - 88f during the day time, and should be lowered to 70 - 72f at night time. The best way to do this is to use a thermostat connected to a timer. If you get the temperatures right and use a large water bowl this should keep your humidity right, buy a good humidity gauge to keep a check on this.
Feeding
If you get the conditions right Blood Python are usually good feeders, depending on size they will take mice or rats readily. Because blood pythons can be a bit aggressive all take care when feeding.
