BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE DUMERILS GROUND BOA
Common Name: Dumeril's Ground Boa
Scientific Name: Acrantophis dumerili
Distribution: Southwest Madagascar
Size: 4' - 7'
NATURAL HABITAT :
This terrestrial Snake inhabits the dry forests of Southwest
Madagascar. In captivity a large vivarium of at least
60" x 36" x 24" is recommended for the adults of this species.
BEHAVIOUR :
This boa can be quite Aggressive.
Usually quite a nervous snake.
Most will usually tame down with regular handling.
When handling large snakes always have at least one other
person in attendance.
CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT :
Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
Supply several climbing areas of branches, logs, rocks.
Provide a humid hide for these snakes, a plastic box with a
hole in the top filled with fresh moss will do fine. Always
remember to change the moss regularly, at least once a
week. Provide dark hiding places.
TEMPERATURE :
Daytime temperature should be: WATER REQUIREMENTS/HUMIDITY :
This snake needs a moderate level of humidity. Supply NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Feed appropriate sized rodents, they will readily take mice
basking area 90 degrees F.
cool area 78 degrees F.
Night temperatures should range between 74-80 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour heat inside the vivarium.
a large, fairly deep dish for drinking and bathing. Mist
the vivarium occasionally to maintain moisture and humidity
levels.
The vivarium should always be well ventilated.
