BASIC CAPTIVE CARE FOR THE AFRICAN FAT TAIL GECKO

Common Name: African Fat Tail Gecko
Scientific Name:Hemitheconyx caudicinctus
Distribution: West Africa
Size: 7" - 8"

NATURAL HABITAT :

This terrestrial Lizard inhabits savannah, woodland, and scrubland
area
of West Africa. When kept in captivity, Adult Fat-Tail Geckos
require a 24"X17"x12" vivarium.

BEHAVIOUR :

Males may become territorial, Keep separate from other males.
Usually a tame lizard and easy to handle.
This lizard is nocturnal (active primarily at night).

CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT :

Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
This lizard likes plenty of hiding places ( imitation plants).
rocks, bark hides and branches. Use bark/gravel substrate.

TEMPERATURE :

Daytime temperature should be:
Basking Area 85 to 90 degrees F.
Cool Area 78 degrees F.
Night temperature should range between 70-75 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour ground heat inside the vivarium.

HUMIDITY / WATER REQUIREMENTS:

This lizard requires low to moderate levels of humidity.
Supply a medium size shallow bowl for drinking and bathing.

NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

This lizard is a carnivore, Will feed on pinkie mice, these lizards also
like assorted insects. Always offer a variety, black or brown crickets,
mealworms, waxworms, Small Locust. Always use a good dusting
supplement.
