BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE RANKIN'S DRAGON
Common Name: Rankin's Dragon
Scientific Name: Pogona rankini
Distribution: Australia
Size: 10" - 12"
NATURAL HABITAT:
This Australian lizard Inhabits semi desert and scrubland areas.
A adult pair in captivity require a vivarium measuring at least
36" x 18" x 18" is recommended.
BEHAVIOUR:
These lizards will become tame with regular handling.
A friendly and easy to handle lizard.
Males can become territorial, Keep separate from other
males. These lizards are very active during the day.
CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT:
Use full spectrum 5% UVB lighting 12-14 hours per day.
Provide at least one basking area with access to a cooler
area. Supply several basking areas of logs, rocks. Supply
Lots of climbing branches.
Supply hiding places cork bark or rocks for cover.
Substrate: fine sand and/or gravel would be good.
TEMPERATURE:
Daytime temperature should be:
basking area 95 degrees F.
cool area 80 degrees F.
Night temperatures should range between 70-75 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour ground heat inside
the vivarium.
HUMIDITY / WATER REQUIREMENTS
These lizards needs only low levels of humidity.
Requires only a small water dish for drinking.
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
These lizards are omnivores, There main diet consists
of crickets, locusts, waxworm and pinkies. Also assorted
dark greens (dandelions,mustard,turnip) cabbage,sprouts
green beans, and runner-beans
Offer a variety for proper nutrition. Also use a good
vitamin supplement.
