SLIPPERY PROBLEM IN READING

A 'full-scaled' police operation was launched today (May 10) after a passerby spotted a four and a half foot snake on Reading's Caversham Road.

The wriggling reptile is now in the custody of Oakley Veterinary Clinic after being captured by police officers WPC Karen Brown and WPC Michelle Clements.

Far from becoming 'hiss-terical' on being confronted by the agitated reptile, WPC Clements used her baton to gently pin it down while WPC Brown put it in a kit bag watched by a growing crowd.

"My husband used to have a snake but I must admit I don't like them very much," said WPC Clements. "It was a bit of a surprise to hear that one was on the loose on the Caversham Road!

"When we arrived the snake was quite upset and was striking out at people. I think it was just frightened.

"After we got it into the bag it quietened down. We took it to a local vet's surgery, but so far we haven't been able to establish what sort of snake it is - although the vets believe it might be a corn snake - or how it came to be loose on the Caversham Road."
